19th century maine spruce gum box carved horse design folk art
This small carved out wood box is extra special with the chip carved horse and sweet heart carved heart design. The history of these book boxes was that in maine in the mid 19th century a lot of gum was being produced from spruce gum trees . So lumberman would carve these and bring home as a gift. A true desirable item . Measures 6 1/2 by 4 by 1 1/2 thick . Had lids missing on top and bottom . Edge of book is worn off where heart is seen missing too. These made between 1840-1900 period in maine .
